Free up Amazon Photos storage
Amazon Photos backs up pictures to your Amazon account. This phone still keeps Camera originals plus a local cache of thumbnails and recently opened items. Backup is not the same as deleting. Never remove a photo from the phone until Amazon Photos shows it as backed up, unless you have another copy.
See how much space Amazon Photos is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Amazon Photos.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap Amazon Photos.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Confirm backup before you delete local photos
- Open Amazon Photos.
- Open settings (profile or gear) and find Backup / Upload settings.
- Confirm Backup is on and the Camera / Screenshots folders you care about are included.
- Wait until recently taken shots show as backed up.
Clearing Amazon Photos cache does not delete your Amazon library. Deleting from Photos or Gallery can delete the only copy if backup never finished.
Remove offline and cached previews
- In Amazon Photos settings, look for Offline, Downloaded, or Clear cache.
- Remove albums you made available offline if you no longer need them on the plane or subway.
- Clear cache if the app offers it.
Cache is previews. Offline albums are full files you asked the app to keep. Cloud photos stay in the account.
Recently Deleted / Trash
Items you delete in Amazon Photos go to Trash for a limited time, then they are permanently removed from the Amazon library. Empty Trash only after you are sure. That is account data, not cache.
Clear Amazon Photos cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Amazon Photos.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out. Pending uploads on this phone can be lost.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Amazon Photos still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Wait until Backup has finished. Photos already in your Amazon Photos library stay. Do not delete Camera originals that still show as not backed up.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Amazon Photos again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Amazon Photos is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
