Free up Apple Maps storage
Apple Maps gets large from Offline Maps you download in the Maps app, plus tile cache. Guides and saved places stay with your Apple ID. Offline Maps is an iPhone / iPad feature. There is no Android Apple Maps app.
See how much space Maps is using
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Maps.
Google Maps is a different app. This guide is Apple Maps.
Delete Offline Maps
- Open the Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture (or the account / library button).
- Tap Offline Maps.
- Open a downloaded region.
- Tap Delete Map / Remove Download (wording can vary).
Each region shows its size. Delete cities you are not visiting. You can download a smaller area later.
Limit how Offline Maps grow
- Open Maps > profile > Offline Maps.
- Open Offline Maps settings if shown.
- Turn off automatic updates if you do not want packs to refresh at full size on their own.
- Use Optimize Storage if Apple offers it on your iOS version.
Saved places, Recents, and Guides are not the multi-gigabyte item. Offline Maps are.
If Maps is still large
iPhone does not give a separate Apple Maps cache button. Delete Offline Maps first. Restart the phone. If iPhone Storage still lists Maps as huge with no downloads left, the leftover is cache. Offloading Maps is limited because it is a system app. A restart plus deleting Offline Maps is the honest first pass.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Apple Maps still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Maps is a system app, so you usually cannot delete it. Saved places and Guides stay with your Apple ID. Offline Maps on this iPhone will need to be downloaded again if you remove them.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Apple Maps again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Apple Maps is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
