Free up Apple Music storage
Apple Music keeps downloaded albums, playlists, and Spatial Audio files on the phone so they play offline. Your library stays in iCloud / your Apple Account. Removing downloaded music only deletes the copies on this device.
See how much space Apple Music is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Music.
You can also open iPhone Settings > Music > Downloaded Music to see albums on this phone.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap Apple Music.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Apple Music does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. Use Downloaded Music in Settings, or the downloaded filter in Library.
Remove downloaded music in Library
iPhone
- Open the Music app and tap Library.
- Open Downloaded (or filter Library to downloaded music).
- Swipe a song, album, or playlist, then tap Remove > Remove Downloads.
Android
- Open Apple Music and tap Library.
- Open downloaded music.
- Tap the menu on an album or playlist and remove the download.
The album stays in your library. Only the offline files leave this phone.
Delete Downloaded Music from iPhone Settings
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Music.
- Tap Downloaded Music.
- Swipe an artist or album left, or tap Edit, then delete what you do not need offline.
You can also turn on Optimize Storage on the Music settings page so iPhone removes downloads you have not played when space is low.
Lower download quality
- Open iPhone Settings > Music (or Apple Music Settings on Android).
- Open Audio Quality.
- Lower Downloads quality. Lossless and Spatial downloads are the largest files.
Already downloaded tracks stay at the old quality until you remove them and download again.
Clear Apple Music cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Apple Music.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Apple Music on this phone. That signs you out and removes local downloads. The library stays on your Apple Account.
iPhone does not offer a separate Music cache button. Use Downloaded Music or offload Music in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Apple Music still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Downloads will need to be re-downloaded after you sign in. Your Apple Account keeps the library, playlists, and purchases.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Apple Music again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Apple Music is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
