Free up ChatGPT storage

ChatGPT keeps your conversations in your OpenAI account, not as a local chat database. What grows on the phone is cache, generated images, voice clips, and files you saved to Photos or Files. Clearing cache does not delete cloud chats. Deleting a chat in the app also does not free much space on this device, because that history lives on the account.

iPhone

1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
3. Tap ChatGPT.

Android

1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
2. Tap ChatGPT.
3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

ChatGPT does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. The number you see is the app plus local cache and leftover media, not your whole OpenAI history.

Delete images and files saved on this phone

1. Open Photos or Gallery and search for images you saved from ChatGPT.
2. Delete the ones you do not need, then empty Recently Deleted / Trash.
3. Open the Files or Downloads app and delete exported images, PDFs, or audio you no longer want.

Those copies sit outside the ChatGPT app. Clearing the app cache leaves them in place. The same images can still exist in the cloud chat if you generated them there.

Stop ChatGPT from saving new images to Photos

1. When ChatGPT shows a generated image, skip Save / Save to Photos unless you want a local copy.
2. On iPhone, you can also open iPhone Settings > ChatGPT and limit Photos access to None or Selected Photos if you do not want it writing to the library.

Voice, files, and temporary chats

Voice mode can leave short audio leftovers in cache. Typed chats and uploaded files stay with the account. Temporary Chat (if you use it) is meant not to sit in history. It still does not replace clearing cache when the app size is high.

In ChatGPT Settings > Data Controls, Delete all chats removes cloud history. Use that only if you want the conversations gone. It is not a phone-storage tool.

Clear ChatGPT cache on Android

1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > ChatGPT.
2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out and reset the app. Cloud chats still come back after you sign in.

iPhone does not offer a separate ChatGPT cache button. Offload the app in iPhone Storage, or reinstall, if the total stays high after you delete saved images.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and ChatGPT still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

1. Chats stay in your OpenAI account. Save any images or files you only have on this phone first. Reinstalling does not delete cloud chats.
2. Delete the app from your phone.
3. Restart your phone.
4. Install ChatGPT again from the App Store or Google Play.
5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
