Free up app storage

Free up Documents storage

Documents by Readdle is a file manager with a built-in browser. Downloads, archives, and browser files are user files in the app. iCloud copies stay if you saved them there. Clearing cache does not delete folders you created. Emptying Trash does.

See how much space Documents is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Documents.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Documents.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Downloads and archives

  1. Open Documents and go to Downloads (or the folder the browser saved into).
  2. Delete large videos, DMGs, APKs, and leftover ZIPs you do not need.
  3. Open extracted archive folders and remove the ZIP if you already kept the files you need.

These are user files. Delete them only if you have another copy or you do not need them.

Browser leftovers

The in-app browser caches pages and downloads. Use Documents settings to clear browser cache if listed. That does not remove files already saved into Downloads.

iCloud and other locations

Files you put in iCloud Drive through Documents follow iCloud rules. Deleting them there deletes the cloud file. Local Documents folders are On this device unless you also copied them out.

Trash

  1. Open Trash in Documents.
  2. Empty it after you are sure. That is permanent.

Clear Documents cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Documents.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless local folders are also copied to iCloud or another backup.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Documents still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Copy Downloads and any local folders to iCloud Drive or another cloud first. Browser cache comes back. Your files do not, unless they were already uploaded.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Documents again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Documents is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
