Free up app storage

Free up FaceTime storage

FaceTime is Apple-only. It keeps recent-call leftovers on this iPhone, and Live Photos you capture during a call are saved in Photos. FaceTime does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. Most of the visible size is the app plus Photos copies, not a hidden chat archive.

See how much space FaceTime is using

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap FaceTime.

If Documents and Data is small, the heavy files are probably Live Photos already in the Photos app. Check Photos next, not only FaceTime.

Clear Recents in FaceTime

  1. Open the FaceTime app.
  2. On Recents, swipe left on a call.
  3. Tap Delete or Remove.
  4. To clear several, tap Edit if you see it, then delete selected calls.

This trims the recent-call list. It does not delete Live Photos already saved to Photos.

Delete FaceTime Live Photos from Photos

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Search for FaceTime, or open Recents and look for Live Photos from calls.
  3. Select the ones you do not need, tap Delete, then empty Recently Deleted.

Apple saves FaceTime Live Photos in Photos. Both people on the call can receive a copy. Deleting them here is what actually frees the large files.

Turn off FaceTime Live Photos

  1. Open iPhone Settings > Apps > FaceTime.
  2. Turn off FaceTime Live Photos.

Apple documents this switch. New calls will not capture Live Photos until you turn it back on.

Delete FaceTime data from iCloud

  1. Open iPhone Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
  2. Open iCloud storage (or See All / storage breakdown).
  3. If you see FaceTime, open it and delete FaceTime data from iCloud.

Apple lists FaceTime as an iCloud storage category you can remove. This is iCloud space, not the same as Documents and Data on the phone. Voicemail tied to that Apple Account can be affected, so read the confirmation before you delete.

Offload FaceTime if the app binary is the large number

  1. Open iPhone Settings > General > iPhone Storage > FaceTime.
  2. Tap Offload App if you only need to drop the app size.
  3. Use Delete App only if you also want Documents and Data gone, then reinstall FaceTime from the App Store.

FaceTime is part of iOS. You can still place calls from Phone or Messages after you understand what delete removes. Recents and Live Photos in Photos are the parts you can clean by hand.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and FaceTime still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. FaceTime has no chat backup. Recents are local. Live Photos stay in Photos until you delete them there. Offload keeps documents. Delete App removes local FaceTime data on this iPhone.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install FaceTime again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After FaceTime is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
