Free up app storage

Free up Google Sheets storage

Spreadsheets live in Drive. This phone stores sheets you made available offline and a recent-file cache. Clearing cache does not delete Drive files. Emptying Drive Trash does.

See how much space Sheets is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Sheets.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Sheets.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Turn off Make available offline

  1. Open Google Sheets.
  2. Tap the menu > Offline.
  3. Next to a file, tap More and turn off Available offline / Make available offline.

The spreadsheet stays in Drive. Large sheets with many tabs are usually the biggest local copies.

Recent files cache

  1. Open Sheets > menu > Settings.
  2. Turn off Make recent files available offline if you do not need recents on the phone.

That is cache. It is not Drive Trash.

Autosave cache vs your spreadsheet

Online edits autosave to Drive. Wait until a file finishes saving before you clear app data. Unsynced local edits can be lost. Deleting a sheet in Sheets moves it to Drive Trash, which is permanent after you empty Trash.

Clear Sheets cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Sheets.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Google Sheets still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Spreadsheets in Drive stay. Wait until Offline edits finish saving. Export any local-only draft first.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Google Sheets again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Google Sheets is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
