Free up Google Voice storage
Google Voice keeps voicemail audio, transcripts, MMS photos, and call leftovers on this phone and in your Google account. The app cache is local. The inbox itself lives on voice.google.com.
See how much space Google Voice is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Google Voice or Voice.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap Google Voice or Voice.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Voice does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. Use the system total, then delete voicemail and messages in the app.
Delete voicemail and transcripts
- Open Google Voice and tap Voicemail.
- Open a message, or tap the avatar to select several.
- Tap Delete, then confirm Delete.
Google's help: deleting a voicemail removes the audio and the transcript from your account view. Check Spam in the menu if old junk is still sitting there.
Delete text and MMS conversations
- Open the Messages tab.
- Open a conversation.
- Tap More (three dots) > Delete, then confirm.
Google says you delete conversations one at a time. After delete, you cannot open that thread again in Voice. Copies may still exist on the other person's phone.
Archive instead of keeping a huge inbox
- Open Messages, Calls, or Voicemail.
- Select items.
- Tap Archive.
Archive hides items from the inbox. It does not always free the same space as Delete. Use delete for voicemail audio you will never play again.
Export if you need a copy
- Use Google Takeout, or Voice Settings > export if your account shows it.
- Export includes call logs, texts, voicemails, and transcripts.
Do this before a large delete if you might need the audio later.
Clear Google Voice cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Google Voice.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Voice and sign in again. Inbox items stay on the Google account until you delete them in Voice.
iPhone does not offer a separate Voice cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high after you delete voicemail.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Google Voice still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- You do not need a chat backup. Messages, voicemail, and transcripts stay on your Google account until you delete them. Sign in again after reinstall.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Google Voice again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Google Voice is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
