Free up app storage

Free up Grindr storage

Grindr caches nearby profile photos and chat pictures on this phone. Messages, media, and profile settings now follow the account, not the device. Photo cache and unsaved chat photos are the local pile.

See how much space Grindr is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Grindr.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications).
  2. Tap Grindr.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

A busy inbox with lots of photo messages is the usual reason Grindr looks large.

Photo cache

Grid thumbnails you already scrolled past still leave copies on the phone. Grindr Help tells Android users to open Settings > Apps > Grindr > Storage > Clear cache when chat photos show as empty bubbles. The cascade stays. Pictures load again when you open a profile.

Chat media

  1. Open a chat that has photos.
  2. Save anything you want to Photos before you reset the app.
  3. To remove photos you uploaded to send later, open the camera icon in a chat, press and hold a thumbnail, then delete it from media.

Grindr Help says chats and profile photos come back after you sign in to the same account. Expiring photos you already viewed are gone. Clearing cache is not the same as deleting a chat.

Clear Grindr cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Grindr.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Grindr on this phone. Grindr Help documents Clear Data as an Android factory reset of the app. Your profile stays. Local chat media can need to reload.

iPhone does not offer a separate Grindr cache button. Grindr Help's iOS path is iPhone Storage > Grindr > Delete App. Offload first if you only want the binary gone.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Grindr still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Chats, profile photos, favorites, and blocks stay on your Grindr account. Save chat photos you care about first.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Grindr again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Grindr is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
