Free up GroupMe storage
GroupMe caches group photos, videos, and shared files so threads open fast. The messages stay on your Microsoft / GroupMe account. The phone copy is cache plus anything you saved.
See how much space GroupMe is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap GroupMe.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap GroupMe.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
GroupMe does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. Use the system total, then delete photos in groups and clear cache.
Delete photos and files from a group
- Open the group.
- Tap the group name or avatar at the top.
- Open Photos or Files / shared media.
- Open a large item, tap the menu, then tap Delete if you posted it or if you are an admin.
You can also tap and hold a photo in the chat and delete it. Other members keep their own copies unless you delete the post from the group.
Leave or mute groups you do not need
- Open the group > group name.
- Tap Leave group, or turn off notifications if you only want less new media.
Leaving stops new photos from caching on this phone. Old cache can remain until you clear it.
Remove copies in Photos or Downloads
- Open Photos / Gallery and Files / Downloads.
- Delete GroupMe photos and files you saved there.
- Empty Recently Deleted / Trash.
Clearing GroupMe cache does not remove files you already saved outside the app.
Clear GroupMe cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > GroupMe.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset GroupMe and sign in again. Group history stays on the account.
iPhone does not offer a separate GroupMe cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high after you delete media.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and GroupMe still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- You do not need a chat backup. Groups stay on your GroupMe / Microsoft account. Sign in again after reinstall.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install GroupMe again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After GroupMe is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
