Free up app storage

Free up KakaoTalk storage

KakaoTalk keeps chat photos, videos, voice notes, files, stickers, and Talk Drive leftovers on this phone. Group chats are usually the biggest reason it grows. Kakao keeps media on its servers for a limited time, so save anything important before you delete it.

See how much space KakaoTalk is using

  1. Open KakaoTalk.
  2. Tap the More tab (three dots).
  3. Tap the gear (Settings).
  4. Tap Data and Storage (some versions still say Storage Management).

You will see temporary data and chatroom storage. You can also check the system total: iPhone Settings > General > iPhone Storage > KakaoTalk, or Android Settings > Apps > KakaoTalk > Storage.

Delete temporary data

  1. Open Settings > Data and Storage.
  2. Tap Delete temporary data.
  3. Confirm Delete.

This is cache. Chat text stays. Media you have not saved to Photos may need to download again, and older files past Kakao's retention period may not come back.

Manage chatroom storage

  1. Open Settings > Data and Storage.
  2. Tap Manage chatroom storage.
  3. Open the largest chat first.
  4. Delete photos, videos, voice, or files for that room, or delete all media in the room.

Kakao lists rooms by size. Start at the top. This is not a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage picker for every file type in one global list. It is room-by-room storage management.

Save photos you care about first. Media that was never downloaded, and files whose server retention already ended, cannot be restored.

Delete media from one chat

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the menu, then the settings gear.
  3. Open Manage Chatroom Data.
  4. Delete selected media, or use Delete All Chat Messages and Media only if you want the whole history gone.

Talk Drive and Talk Cloud

  1. Open the More tab.
  2. Open Talk Drive, Talk Drawer, or Talk Cloud (the label depends on your version).
  3. Delete photos, videos, and files you do not need.
  4. Empty Trash if you see it. Deleted Drive items sit there for about 30 days.

Talk Cloud can keep originals in Kakao's cloud and leave smaller previews on the phone. That is a paid backup product. Canceling it can lock you out of stored data, so do not treat it as a free cache clear.

Remove unused stickers

  1. Open a chat and tap the sticker / emoticon button.
  2. Open your downloaded sticker packs.
  3. Remove packs you do not use.

Stickers download as local files. Unused packs add up if you collect them for years.

Turn off media auto-download and auto-save

  1. Open Settings > Data and Storage (or Chats, depending on version).
  2. Turn off automatic photo and video download on mobile data, or limit it to Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn off saving incoming photos and videos to Photos or Gallery.

After this, media downloads when you tap it. Copies already in Photos stay there until you delete them, including Recently Deleted / Trash.

Clear KakaoTalk cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > KakaoTalk.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset KakaoTalk. That signs you out and can wipe local chats that were never backed up.

iPhone does not offer a separate KakaoTalk cache button. Use Delete temporary data inside the app instead.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and KakaoTalk still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Back up chats first (Settings > Talk backup / Talk Cloud if you use it). Kakao media on the server expires. Save photos you care about to Photos before you delete the app.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install KakaoTalk again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After KakaoTalk is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
