Free up app storage

Free up Kik storage

Kik keeps chat photos, videos, GIFs, and group files on this phone so threads open fast. Groups are usually the biggest reason it grows.

See how much space Kik is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Kik.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Kik.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Kik does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. Use the system total, then delete chats and media inside Kik.

Delete media from a chat or group

  1. Open the chat or group.
  2. Tap and hold a photo, video, or file.
  3. Tap Delete.

Start with groups that share a lot of video. Other people keep their own copies.

Delete a conversation

  1. On the chat list, swipe or tap and hold the conversation.
  2. Tap Delete or Chat settings > delete / leave.
  3. Confirm.

Leaving a group stops new files from arriving. Delete the chat if you also want the local media gone.

Remove copies in Photos or Downloads

  1. Open Photos / Gallery and Files / Downloads.
  2. Delete Kik photos and videos you saved there.
  3. Empty Recently Deleted / Trash.

Clearing Kik cache does not remove files you already saved outside the app.

Clear Kik cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Kik.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Kik. That signs you out and wipes local chat files.

iPhone does not offer a separate Kik cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high after you delete media.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Kik still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Save photos and files you care about first. After reinstall, sign in with your Kik username. Some chat history may return, but local media can be gone.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Kik again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Kik is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
