Free up Kindle storage
Kindle stores downloaded books, samples, and dictionaries on this phone so they open offline. Purchased books stay in the Kindle Cloud. Removing a download only deletes the local copy.
See how much space Kindle is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Kindle.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap Kindle.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Kindle does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. Filter Library to downloaded / On Device books.
Remove downloaded books (keep them in the cloud)
- Open Kindle and go to Library.
- Filter to downloaded or On Device if you see that option.
- Tap and hold a book (or tap the menu on the cover).
- Tap Remove download or Remove from device.
Do not tap Delete / Permanently delete unless you mean to remove the title from your Amazon library. Remove download keeps the book in the cloud. Your place and notes stay with the account.
Remove samples and extra dictionaries
- In Library, look for sample books you are not reading.
- Remove those downloads the same way.
- If Kindle downloaded extra dictionaries or large personal documents, remove the ones you do not need on this phone.
Comics, magazines, and PDFs are usually larger than a typical ebook.
Clear Kindle cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Kindle.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Kindle on this phone. That signs you out and removes local books. Purchased titles stay in the Kindle Cloud.
iPhone does not offer a separate Kindle cache button. Remove downloads in Library, or offload Kindle in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Kindle still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Downloaded books will need to be re-downloaded after you sign in. Your Amazon account keeps the Kindle library, notes, and reading position.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Kindle again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Kindle is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
