Free up app storage

Free up Libby storage

Libby stores borrowed ebooks and audiobooks on the phone, plus card and catalog cache for your libraries. Loans stay on your library card until they expire or you return them. Removing a download only deletes the file on this device.

See how much space Libby is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Libby.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Libby.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Libby does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. Open Shelf to see loans and downloads.

Remove a download or return a loan

  1. Open Libby and tap Shelf.
  2. Open Loans.
  3. Tap a title, then choose Return if you are done with it, or look for Remove Download / manage download if you still want the loan but not the file.

Return sends the title back to the library. Remove download keeps the loan on your card until the due date, without the file on this phone. Audiobooks are usually much larger than ebooks.

Remove extra cards and catalog cache

  1. Open the menu and tap Cards (or library cards).
  2. Remove a card you no longer use, if Libby offers that.

Extra cards keep extra catalog and hold data on the device. You can add the card again later with your library number.

Clear Libby cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Libby.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Libby on this phone. That removes local downloads and can drop cards you have not synced. Loans stay on the library card.

iPhone does not offer a separate Libby cache button. Return or remove downloads on Shelf, or offload Libby in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Libby still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Downloaded loans will need to be re-downloaded after you add your cards again. Loans, holds, and history stay on the library card until they expire.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Libby again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Libby is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
