Free up app storage

Free up MEGA storage

MEGA stores files in your MEGA cloud. This phone keeps the Offline collection, Camera uploads waiting to send, Transfers leftovers, and a preview cache. Clearing cache does not delete MEGA Cloud Drive files. Rubbish bin deletes do.

See how much space MEGA is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap MEGA.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap MEGA.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Clear the Offline collection

  1. Open MEGA.
  2. Open Offline.
  3. Remove files you do not need on this phone (More > remove from Offline, or delete from the Offline list).

Removing from Offline drops the local copy. The file stays in Cloud Drive unless you also delete it there.

Camera uploads

  1. Open MEGA settings.
  2. Open Camera uploads.
  3. Turn it off if you do not want new Photos copied into MEGA.

Camera uploads are extra copies. Confirm a photo is in Cloud Drive before you delete the Camera original. Do not delete the only unbacked-up copy.

Transfers and downloads

Open Transfers and clear finished lists if MEGA keeps them. Files you saved with Download also sit in Files or Downloads. Those are user files. Delete them there if you no longer need the local copy. The MEGA cloud file stays.

Rubbish bin

Deleted cloud files go to Rubbish bin. Emptying it permanently deletes them from MEGA. That is account data, not cache.

Clear MEGA cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > MEGA.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out. Pending Camera uploads on this phone can be lost.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and MEGA still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Cloud Drive files stay in your MEGA account. Finish Camera uploads and Transfers first. Anything that exists only in Offline on this phone should already be in Cloud Drive; confirm before you delete the app.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install MEGA again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After MEGA is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
