Free up app storage

Free up Messenger storage

Messenger keeps photos, videos, voice notes, and files from your chats on the phone so they open fast. It can also save copies into Photos or Gallery. Most message text lives on your account, so you can clear local media without wiping the conversation list.

See how much space Messenger is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Messenger.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications).
  2. Tap Messenger.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Messenger does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. Use the system storage page to see the total, then delete media inside chats and turn off auto-save so it does not grow back.

Delete large photos and videos from a chat

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the name or photo at the top.
  3. Open the media section (photos, videos, and files shared in that chat).
  4. Open a large video or photo.
  5. Tap and hold it in the chat, then tap Delete / Remove.

Start with group chats and long video threads. Deleting a file for you removes it from this phone. Other people keep their own copies.

Delete old chats you do not need

  1. On the Chats tab, tap and hold the conversation.
  2. Tap Delete.
  3. Confirm.

This removes the thread from this device. If you use end-to-end encrypted chats, check that those chats can come back after you sign in (PIN or Secure Storage) before you delete a lot at once.

Stop Messenger from saving copies to Photos or Gallery

  1. Open Messenger.
  2. Tap your profile picture (top left).
  3. Tap Photos & media.
  4. Turn off Save photos and videos.

New incoming media stays inside Messenger unless you tap Save. Copies already in Photos or Gallery stay there until you delete them, including Recently Deleted / Trash.

Use less data so media does not keep downloading

  1. Open Messenger and tap your profile picture.
  2. Look for Photos & media, Use less data, or Data saver (the label depends on your app version).
  3. Turn the saver on, or turn off automatic photo and video download on mobile data.

After this, photos and videos load when you tap them. That is the strongest way to stop busy group chats from filling the phone again.

Clear Messenger cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Messenger.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Messenger. That signs you out and wipes local app data.

iPhone does not offer a separate Messenger cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high after you delete media.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Messenger still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Most chats come back after you sign in. If you use end-to-end encrypted chats, confirm your PIN or Secure Storage first.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Messenger again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Messenger is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
