Free up app storage

Free up Microsoft Teams storage

Teams caches chat images, files, meeting leftovers, and temporary data on this phone. Chat and files stay in your Microsoft account or work tenant. Clearing temporary files is the safe first step. Clearing app data signs you out.

See how much space Teams is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Microsoft Teams.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Microsoft Teams or Teams.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Clear temporary files in Teams

  1. Open Teams and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Data and Storage (some work accounts say Data and storage under General).
  4. Tap Clear temporary files.

This is the Microsoft-documented storage screen on personal / Teams Free, and the same path appears on many work installs. Messages stay in the cloud.

Clear app data only if cache is not enough

  1. Open Teams > profile > Settings > Data and Storage.
  2. Tap Clear app data.
  3. On iPhone you can also open iPhone Settings > Teams and turn on Clear app data, then reopen Teams.

This resets the app and signs you out. Use Clear temporary files first. Reset the app's database is a heavier reset. Use it only if Teams is broken, not just large.

Use less data for calls and images

  1. Open Data and Storage.
  2. Turn on reduced data for video calls if you see that switch.
  3. Lower Image upload quality if you send a lot of photos from this phone.

That slows how fast new media piles up. It does not delete files already cached.

Delete downloaded files outside Teams

  1. Open a file you saved from a chat or channel.
  2. If Teams sent it to Files or Downloads, delete the copy there.
  3. Meeting recordings usually live in OneDrive or SharePoint, not as a second local movie, unless you downloaded them.

Clear Teams cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Microsoft Teams.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out and reset Teams.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Microsoft Teams still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. You do not need a chat backup. Teams messages and files stay in your Microsoft account. You will sign in again after reinstall.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Microsoft Teams again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Teams is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
