Free up app storage

Free up MUBI storage

MUBI stores films and series you download in the iPhone or Android app so they play offline. Your watchlist and notes stay on your MUBI account. Removing a download only deletes the file on this phone. Downloads live on internal storage only. They cannot go to a memory card.

See how much space MUBI is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap MUBI.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap MUBI.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

MUBI does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. Open a downloaded film in the app to see whether it is still stored on this phone.

Remove downloaded films

  1. Open the MUBI app and find a film you already downloaded.
  2. Open the film page and tap the download control again, or remove the download if that option is shown.
  3. Repeat for other finished films.

A downloaded film stays available for 30 days. After you start watching, the license lasts 48 hours, then you need a connection to renew it. The film stays on your watchlist and can be downloaded again later if it is still on MUBI.

Download over Wi-Fi

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi. MUBI recommends Wi-Fi for downloading films.
  2. Open a film in the iOS or Android app and tap download.
  3. Wait until the film is stored before you go offline.

Feature films are large HD files. One or two downloads often explain a sudden jump in app size. There is no official desktop download. Phone and tablet apps are the offline path.

Clear MUBI cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > MUBI.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset MUBI on this phone. That signs you out and removes local downloads. Your watchlist stays on your account.

iPhone does not offer a separate MUBI cache button. Remove downloads in the app, or offload MUBI in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and MUBI still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Downloaded films will need to be re-downloaded after you sign in. Your MUBI account keeps the watchlist and ratings.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install MUBI again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After MUBI is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
