Free up app storage

Free up Netflix storage

Netflix uses the most space for titles saved under My Downloads. It also keeps a smaller playback cache so the next episode starts quickly. Your profile, My List, and viewing history stay on your account. Removing a download only deletes the file on this phone.

See how much space Netflix is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Netflix.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap Netflix.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Netflix does not have a WhatsApp-style storage screen. Open the Downloads tab to see the titles that are actually on the phone.

Delete titles from My Downloads

  1. Open Netflix and tap the Downloads tab (some versions put it under My Netflix).
  2. Open My Downloads.
  3. Tap the download icon on a title, or swipe / tap and hold, then tap Remove Download or Delete.

Start with movies and full seasons. Those files are much larger than a single episode. The title stays in your profile and can be downloaded again later.

Turn off Smart Downloads

  1. Open the Downloads tab.
  2. Tap the menu or Smart Downloads.
  3. Turn Smart Downloads off.

Smart Downloads can replace a watched episode with the next one, and it can fill the phone again after you delete files. Turn it off if you only want titles you pick yourself.

Lower download quality

  1. Open the Downloads tab.
  2. Open download settings (gear, or App Settings > Downloads on some versions).
  3. Set video quality to a lower option, and turn on Wi-Fi only if that toggle is shown.

New downloads will be smaller. Titles already on the phone stay at the old quality until you remove them and download again.

Clear Netflix cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Netflix.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Netflix on this phone. That signs you out and removes local downloads. My List and history stay on your account.

iPhone does not offer a separate Netflix cache button. Delete items in My Downloads, or offload the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Netflix still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Downloads will need to be re-downloaded after you sign in. Your account keeps My List, profiles, and watch history.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Netflix again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Netflix is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
