Free up Nextcloud storage
Nextcloud files live on your server. This phone stores files you marked available offline, auto-uploads waiting to send, and a document cache. Clearing cache does not delete server files. Deleting a file in Nextcloud or emptying Deleted files does.
See how much space Nextcloud is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Nextcloud.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps.
- Tap Nextcloud.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Server quota is separate. Check that in the Nextcloud web app or the app’s storage / account screen.
Remove offline files
Official Android app: you can set files available offline. Those copies stay on the phone and update from the server.
- Open Nextcloud and find files marked offline (often under On this device or Offline).
- Open More next to a file or folder.
- Turn off Set as available offline (wording varies).
- On Android, delete leftover local folders from On this device and choose the local-only delete if Nextcloud asks. Do not delete from the server.
The file stays on the Nextcloud server. Only the copy on this phone is removed.
Clear cache inside Nextcloud (iPhone)
Nextcloud’s iOS app documents Settings > Advanced > Clear cache / Delete cache. That drops cached files and related local metadata. Server files stay. Finish auto-uploads first.
- Open Nextcloud > Settings.
- Open Advanced.
- Tap Clear cache or Delete cache.
Downloads outside Nextcloud
If you used Download, Open with, or Save to Files, those copies live in Files or Downloads. Delete them there. That does not remove the server original.
Clear Nextcloud cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Nextcloud.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Nextcloud maintainers also point Android users here when the app has no one-tap cache clear. Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to sign out. Pending auto-uploads on this phone can be lost. Server files stay.
iPhone does not offer a separate system cache button. Use Settings > Advanced > Clear cache, then offload the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Nextcloud still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Files on your Nextcloud server stay. Finish auto-uploads and any offline edits first. You will sign in to the same server URL after reinstall.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Nextcloud again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Nextcloud is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
