Free up app storage

Free up Snapchat storage

Snapchat caches Snaps, Stories, and chat media so they open fast. Memories you save can live in Snapchat cloud storage. Copies saved to Camera Roll live in Photos or Gallery on this phone. Clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

See how much space Snapchat is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Snapchat.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications).
  2. Tap Snapchat.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Snapchat does not have a WhatsApp-style per-chat Free up Storage list. Some versions show Memory usage in Settings. That is cache on this phone, not your Memories cloud total.

To see Memories cloud usage: Snapchat Settings > Memories > Cloud Storage (path can also sit under My App).

Clear cache

Current Snapchat (from Snapchat Support):

iPhone

  1. Open Snapchat and tap your profile (Bitmoji) > the gear (Settings).
  2. Under App and Privacy, tap My Privacy and Data.
  3. Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache.
  4. Confirm Clear. iPhone may also let you clear some caches separately.

Android

  1. Open Snapchat Settings (gear).
  2. Tap My Privacy and Data.
  3. Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data, then Clear Cache (some versions say Clear Cache directly).
  4. Confirm Clear or Continue.

Older versions listed this under Account Actions or showed Memory usage. Use whichever label you see. Clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.

Memories vs Camera Roll

  1. Open Snapchat Settings > Memories (under My App on current versions).
  2. Tap Save Button.
  3. Choose Memories, Memories and Camera Roll, or Camera Roll.

Memories is Snapchat cloud storage (complimentary cap, then a paid plan if you go over). It does not fill the phone the same way cache does. Camera Roll writes files into Photos or Gallery. Those copies stay on the phone until you delete them there.

If you already saved a lot to Camera Roll, delete the extras in Photos or Gallery, including Recently Deleted / Trash. Do not wipe Memories unless you mean to remove those Snaps from Snapchat.

Delete Memories you do not need

  1. Swipe up from the camera to open Memories.
  2. Tap and hold a Snap or select several.
  3. Tap Delete. Check Recently Deleted in Memories if Snapchat offers it.

This frees Memories cloud space. It only frees phone storage if a local copy was also kept for backup or Camera Roll.

Clear Snapchat cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Snapchat.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Prefer Clear Cache inside Snapchat first. Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Snapchat. That signs you out. Confirm Memories are backed up first.

iPhone does not offer a separate Snapchat cache button in system Settings. Use Clear Cache inside Snapchat instead.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Snapchat still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Confirm Memories are fully backed up before you log out or uninstall. Clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Snapchat again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Snapchat is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
