Free up Threads storage
Threads caches photos and videos from the feed so posts open fast. Unfinished drafts can stay on this phone until they sync. Posted threads stay on your Instagram-linked account.
See how much space Threads is using
iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap Threads.
Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications).
- Tap Threads.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
Threads does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen. The total is mostly cache plus the app.
Delete drafts
- Open Threads and tap compose (the create button).
- If Threads asks to restore a draft, open it.
- Delete the text and media, or discard the draft if that option is shown.
Posted content is on your account. Unsynced drafts are local. Post or save them before you reset the app.
Stop saving copies to Photos or Gallery
- When you share or save a post, skip Save unless you want a copy on the phone.
- Check Photos or Gallery for images you already saved from Threads and delete extras, including Recently Deleted / Trash.
Clear Threads cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Threads.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Threads. That signs you out and can delete unsynced drafts.
iPhone does not offer a separate Threads cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Threads still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Posts stay on your Threads account. Post or discard unsynced drafts first.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Threads again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Threads is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
