Free up app storage

Free up Tumblr storage

Tumblr caches photos, GIFs, and videos from your dashboard. Published posts stay on your blog. Tumblr does not have a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage screen.

See how much space Tumblr is using

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General > iPhone Storage.
  3. Tap Tumblr.

Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications).
  2. Tap Tumblr.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.

Delete drafts

  1. Open your blog and go to Posts or the account menu.
  2. Open Drafts.
  3. Delete drafts you do not need, especially posts with large videos.

Drafts on Tumblr are usually stored with your account once they sync. Huge media you picked from the camera roll can still sit locally until you post or drop the draft.

Queue and offline copies

Queued posts live on your blog. If you saved an image from a post to Photos or Gallery, that copy is on the phone. Delete it there, including Recently Deleted / Trash.

Clear Tumblr cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > Tumblr.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset Tumblr. That signs you out.

iPhone does not offer a separate Tumblr cache button. Offload or delete the app in iPhone Storage if the system total stays high.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and Tumblr still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Posts stay on your Tumblr blog. Check Drafts in the app before you reinstall.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install Tumblr again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After Tumblr is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
