Free up Viber storage
Viber keeps photos, videos, GIFs, and files from chats on this phone. It can also save copies to your gallery. Media you never open is removed from Viber's servers after 14 days, so download anything you care about before you clear it.
See how much space Viber is using
- Open Viber.
- Tap More.
- Tap Settings > Storage.
Wait a moment. You will see free space on the phone, how much Viber uses, and how much each chat uses. Viber media is the pile you can delete on this screen. Other apps is everything else on the phone.
Clear cache files
- Open Storage (steps above).
- Tap Clear cache files.
Cache is mostly communities and channels. Other people are not affected. When you open those chats again, only the messages you scroll through download.
Delete media from a chat
- Open Storage.
- Tap a chat that is using a lot of space.
- Tap a photo or video to open it, tap the trash icon, then Delete item.
To delete several files at once:
- Open the chat in Storage.
- On Android, tap and hold an item. On iPhone, tap Select.
- Select more items, or tap Select all.
- Tap the trash icon, then Delete item.
Those files disappear from your Viber chats on all of your devices. Other people keep their copies. Files already saved to Photos or Gallery stay there until you delete them there.
Clear a whole chat
- Open Chats and tap the conversation.
- Tap the name at the top.
- Tap Chat info > Clear chat content.
- Tap Clear.
This cannot be undone. Hidden chats also hold media. Open them with your PIN and clear those the same way if they are large.
Turn off media auto-download
- Open Viber > More > Settings.
- Turn off Auto download media over mobile network.
- On Android, also turn off Auto-download media when connected to Wi-Fi if you want to tap to download everywhere.
Media you do not download is gone from Viber's servers after 14 days. Save anything important before that.
Keep media for less time (iPhone)
- Open Viber > More > Settings.
- Tap Keep media.
- Choose 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, or Forever.
A shorter period lets Viber drop old files from this phone automatically.
Stop Viber from saving copies to Photos or Gallery
- Open Viber > More > Settings.
- Turn off Save to gallery.
You can still save one photo: open it, tap More (Android) or Save (iPhone). Empty Recently Deleted / Trash if copies are already in Photos or Gallery.
Clear Viber cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > Viber.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Prefer Clear cache files inside Viber first. Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset the app.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and Viber still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Save photos and videos you still need. Viber does not keep unopened media on its servers after 14 days, and deleted chat media is gone from all of your Viber devices.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install Viber again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After Viber is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
