Free up WeChat storage

WeChat keeps chat history on this phone: photos, videos, files, voice messages, and Mini Program leftovers. Cache is safe to clear. Chat history is not stored on WeChat servers unless you back it up, so delete messages only when you do not need them.

See how much space WeChat is using

1. Open WeChat.
2. Tap Me.
3. Tap Settings > General > Storage.

Wait for WeChat to finish calculating. You will see cache, chat history, and other data as separate totals.

Clear cache

1. Open Storage (steps above).
2. Tap Cache, then go to clean / clear it.
3. Confirm.

Cache is temporary. Clearing it does not delete your chat list or message text. Photos and videos may need a moment to load again the next time you open them.

Manage chat history by size or type

1. Open Storage.
2. Open Chat history (or Manage next to it).
3. Filter by time range, message type (photos, videos, files), or sort by size.
4. Select the chats or media you do not need.
5. Clear / delete the selection.

This is the main way to drop gigabytes. Start with the largest chats and with videos. Deleted history cannot be recovered unless you already made a backup.

Clear one chat

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the menu (...) in the top right.
3. Tap Clear Chat History.
4. Confirm.

To delete a few messages only: tap and hold a message > Delete, or choose Select and tap the trash icon.

Clear all chat history

1. Open WeChat > Me > Settings > General.
2. Tap Clear Chat History.
3. Confirm.

This wipes conversations on this phone. Do this only after a backup if you might want the messages later.

Back up before a big delete

1. Open WeChat > Me > Settings > General.
2. Tap Backup & Restore or Backup & Migrate Chats (wording depends on version).
3. Back up to a computer, or migrate to another device, before you clear history.

WeChat chat history does not follow you to a new phone by itself. Without this step, a reinstall can lose years of chats.

Other data from old accounts

If Other data looks huge, WeChat may still be holding files from another account that signed in on this phone. Sign in to that account and clear its cache and chat history the same way.

Clear WeChat cache on Android

1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > WeChat.
2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset WeChat. That wipes local chats.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and WeChat still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

1. Back up chats first: Me > Settings > General > Backup & Restore (or Backup & Migrate Chats). Chat history lives on this phone unless you back it up.
2. Delete the app from your phone.
3. Restart your phone.
4. Install WeChat again from the App Store or Google Play.
5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
