Free up app storage

Free up WhatsApp storage

WhatsApp keeps photos, videos, voice notes, stickers, and documents from your chats on your phone. Busy groups are usually the biggest reason it grows. You can delete the media and keep the text messages.

See how much space WhatsApp is using

iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Storage and data > Free up Storage.

Android

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Storage and data > Free up Storage.

The total at the top is how much WhatsApp media is on your phone. Chats are listed by size underneath.

Delete large or heavily forwarded media

  1. Open Free up Storage (steps above).
  2. Open Larger than 5 MB and Forwarded many times if you see them.
  3. Tap Select (or tap and hold an item on Android).
  4. Select the files you do not need. Use Select all if you want everything in that list.
  5. Tap the trash / Delete icon.
  6. If WhatsApp offers Delete any copies or Delete items and any copies, choose that to clear duplicates too.

This deletes the files for you only. Other people in the chat keep their own copies. You usually cannot redownload deleted items from that chat later.

Free up storage for one chat or group

  1. Open the chat or group.
  2. Tap the chat title at the top.
  3. Tap Free up Storage.
  4. Select the media you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete.

Files in that screen are sorted from largest to smallest, so start at the top for the biggest wins.

Clear all media from a chat at once

iPhone

  1. On the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat.
  2. Tap Clear chat.
  3. Select Clear all media.
  4. Check or uncheck Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio.
  5. Tap Clear media.

Android

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap the menu (three dots) > More > Clear chat.
  3. Select Clear media files.
  4. Check or uncheck Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio.
  5. Tap Clear media.

The chat stays in your list. Only the media types you checked are removed.

Turn off media auto-download

  1. Open WhatsApp Settings (iPhone: tap your profile picture; Android: tap Settings).
  2. Tap Storage and data.
  3. Under Media auto-download, open each connection type (for example Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents on mobile data, Wi-Fi, and roaming).
  4. Set them to Never (or Wi-Fi only if you still want some auto-download at home).

After this, media downloads when you tap it. That is the strongest way to stop busy groups from filling the phone again.

Stop WhatsApp from saving copies to Photos or Gallery

iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp > Settings (profile picture) > Chats.
  2. Turn off Save to Camera Roll.

Android

  1. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats.
  2. Turn off Media visibility.

For one chat or group on Android: open the chat > tap the name > Media visibility > No.

Also empty Recently Deleted / Trash in Photos or Gallery. Deleted copies can sit there for days and still use storage.

Leave groups you do not need

  1. Open the group.
  2. Tap the group name.
  3. Scroll to Exit group (iPhone) or Exit group / Leave group (Android).
  4. Confirm.

Leaving stops new media from arriving. To free space already used, also use Free up Storage for that chat (steps above) before or after you leave.

Delete old chats you do not need

  1. On the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat (or open it and use the menu).
  2. Tap Delete chat.
  3. Confirm.

Back up first if you might want those messages later: Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up.

Clear WhatsApp cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset WhatsApp. That wipes local chat data.

iPhone does not offer a separate WhatsApp cache button. Use Free up Storage inside WhatsApp instead.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and WhatsApp still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Back up anything you care about first (for WhatsApp: Settings > Chats > Chat backup).
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install WhatsApp again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After WhatsApp is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
