Free up WhatsApp Business storage
WhatsApp Business keeps the same chat photos, videos, voice notes, stickers, and documents as WhatsApp. Customer groups and broadcast replies are usually the biggest reason it grows. The catalog is hosted by WhatsApp, so product listings are not the main local storage problem. Chat media is.
These steps follow the live Free up Storage screen, the same one as WhatsApp. You can delete media and keep the text messages.
See how much space WhatsApp Business is using
iPhone
- Open WhatsApp Business.
- Tap your profile picture (or Settings).
- Tap Storage and data > Free up Storage.
Android
- Open WhatsApp Business.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Storage and data > Free up Storage.
The total at the top is how much WhatsApp Business media is on your phone. Chats are listed by size underneath.
Delete large or heavily forwarded media
- Open Free up Storage (steps above).
- Open Larger than 5 MB and Forwarded many times if you see them.
- Tap Select (or tap and hold an item on Android).
- Select the files you do not need. Use Select all if you want everything in that list.
- Tap the trash / Delete icon.
- If WhatsApp offers Delete any copies or Delete items and any copies, choose that to clear duplicates too.
This deletes the files for you only. Customers keep their own copies. You usually cannot redownload deleted items from that chat later.
Free up storage for one chat or group
- Open the chat or group.
- Tap the chat title at the top.
- Tap Free up Storage.
- Select the media you want to delete.
- Tap Delete.
Files in that screen are sorted from largest to smallest, so start at the top for the biggest wins.
Clear all media from a chat at once
iPhone
- On the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat.
- Tap Clear chat.
- Select Clear all media.
- Check or uncheck Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio.
- Tap Clear media.
Android
- Open the chat.
- Tap the menu (three dots) > More > Clear chat.
- Select Clear media files.
- Check or uncheck Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio.
- Tap Clear media.
The chat stays in your list. Only the media types you checked are removed.
Turn off media auto-download
- Open WhatsApp Business Settings (iPhone: tap your profile picture; Android: tap Settings).
- Tap Storage and data.
- Under Media auto-download, open each connection type (Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents on mobile data, Wi-Fi, and roaming).
- Set them to Never (or Wi-Fi only if you still want some auto-download at the shop).
After this, media downloads when you tap it. That is the strongest way to stop customer groups from filling the phone again.
Stop WhatsApp Business from saving copies to Photos or Gallery
iPhone
- Open WhatsApp Business > Settings (profile picture) > Chats.
- Turn off Save to Camera Roll.
Android
- Open WhatsApp Business > Settings > Chats.
- Turn off Media visibility.
For one chat or group on Android: open the chat > tap the name > Media visibility > No.
Also empty Recently Deleted / Trash in Photos or Gallery. Catalog photos you picked from the library stay in Photos until you delete them there. The catalog itself is hosted by WhatsApp.
Catalogs vs chat media
Product photos in the catalog are uploaded to WhatsApp so customers can browse without you resending the same pictures. That does not replace Free up Storage for chat media. If you add catalog items from Camera Roll, those originals still use photo-library space until you delete the local copies.
Leave groups you do not need
- Open the group.
- Tap the group name.
- Scroll to Exit group (iPhone) or Exit group / Leave group (Android).
- Confirm.
Leaving stops new media from arriving. Also use Free up Storage for that chat to free space already used.
Delete old chats you do not need
- On the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat (or open it and use the menu).
- Tap Delete chat.
- Confirm.
Back up first if you might want those messages later: Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up.
Clear WhatsApp Business cache on Android
- Open your phone Settings > Apps > WhatsApp Business.
- Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache.
Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset WhatsApp Business. That wipes local chat data.
iPhone does not offer a separate cache button. Use Free up Storage inside the app instead.
Reinstall the app if storage is still high
If you already cleaned media and WhatsApp Business still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.
- Back up first: Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Catalog items stay with your business account; chat media on the phone does not.
- Delete the app from your phone.
- Restart your phone.
- Install WhatsApp Business again from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.
This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.
What to do next
After WhatsApp Business is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
