Free up app storage

Free up X storage

X caches images, videos, and in-app web pages as you scroll. Posts stay on your account. You can clear media storage and web storage inside Settings. That is not a WhatsApp-style Free up Storage chat list.

See how much space X is using

  1. Open X and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings and support > Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage.
  4. Open Media storage and Web storage to see the local totals.

iPhone (system total)

  1. Open iPhone Settings > General > iPhone Storage > X.

Android (system total)

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > X > Storage or Storage and cache.

Clear media storage

  1. Open Data usage (steps above).
  2. Tap Media storage.
  3. Tap Clear media storage and confirm.

This removes cached photos and videos on this phone. Your posts stay on X. Media loads again as you browse.

Clear web storage

  1. Open Data usage.
  2. Tap Web storage.
  3. Tap Clear web page storage to remove cache and stay signed in.

Clear all web storage also removes cookies and signs you out. Use that only if you mean to log in again.

Delete drafts

  1. Open compose. If a draft restores, open it.
  2. Delete the draft from the composer menu if X lists drafts, or discard the text and media.

Unsynced drafts can be local. Save or post them before a reinstall.

Clear X cache on Android

  1. Open your phone Settings > Apps > X.
  2. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Prefer Clear media storage inside X first. Do not tap Clear storage / Clear data unless you mean to reset X. That signs you out.

iPhone does not offer a separate X cache button in system Settings. Use media storage and web storage inside X instead.

Reinstall the app if storage is still high

If you already cleaned media and X still looks huge, a fresh install can clear leftover cache and temp files that are hard to reach by hand.

  1. Posts stay on X. Save drafts you still want. Clear all web storage signs you out.
  2. Delete the app from your phone.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Install X again from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Sign in and restore from backup if the app offers it.

This often frees a lot of space. You may need to download some media again after restore.

What to do next

After X is lighter, check your photo library for duplicates and similar shots. That is what Dedupo is for.
